Lina Sadik: the potential and determination of an aspiring painter.

By Daffa Konaté January 9, 2023

1 - Could you introduce yourself?

My name is Sadik Lina. I’m Moroccan. I’ve always lived in Casablanca, the city closest to my heart, and I moved to Dubai a few months ago. I’m passionate about art and music. I play the piano, I cook and I love cats. My favourite artist is Matisse and my favourite colour is green.

2 - When and how did you start painting? What sparked your interest?

To be honest, I’ve always painted, though perhaps not as seriously as I do now. I remember always doodling little drawings in my school notebooks. I really got into it and discovered this passion during the lockdown in 2020. I had a lot of free time, so I started drawing instinctively and bought my first canvas, then a second, a third, a fourth…

3 – Did you take any painting lessons?

Yes. When I realised I really had a passion for drawing and painting, I took drawing lessons for a year with a retired architect, every Saturday morning. Then I moved to Dubai and, more recently, I’ve been taking lessons with Valérie, a brilliant drawing teacher who’s also an artist and architect. She’s very inspiring and I’m learning a lot.

4 – How often do you paint?

Honestly, I paint when I feel like it; I don’t put any pressure on myself. I can spend hours drawing, to the point of forgetting to sleep, just as I might not draw for three weeks. However, I attend classes every week, which helps me maintain a regular routine.

5 - What feeling drives you when you’re painting?

Painting allows me to express myself and to put all the ideas in my head down on paper.

6 – What is your style? What inspires you?

I wouldn’t say I have a particular style, as I don’t like to be pigeonholed. But I tend to paint in black and white, and I draw a great deal of inspiration from Moroccan landscapes, geometric shapes and Matisse.

7 - Have you ever exhibited your work? If so, where?

At the moment, some of my works are on display in a small art gallery in Global Village, Dubai.

8 - A final word

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my passion, which is art :)
